CHESTER HIGGINS, JR.: FAMILY, FRIENDS, AND
ACQUAINTANCES
The photos in this exhibition depict Higgins’ family, friends, and acquaintances
in Alabama from the 1960s to the present. The photographer’s self-professed
goal is to articulate the “decency, dignity, and virtuous character”
of his subjects. He feels that his images of ordinary moments “enable
humanity to see and appreciate the fullness of itself.” He says, “With
the camera I learn to embrace the spirit that is the essence of all existence.
I see my reflection in the spirit of my subjects, and through my art,
I become whole. I search for the signature of the spirit.”
